At Rock U Canada, we believe learning music should be inspiring, empowering, and authentic with an epic sprinkle of some good ol' rock ‘n’ roll. That’s why our instructors and mentors aren’t "just” teachers – they’re passionate musicians who know how to bring out the unique essence of every student, regardless of age or stage of life.
One of those all-star educators is Tyler Casat.
With his professional performance background, world-class education, multi-instrumental talent, and overall down-to-earth vibe, Tyler makes music lessons for his students fun, accessible, and tailored to the unique goals of each student, and meets every student where they are at in their musical development, talent or knowledge.
Whether you're picking up an instrument for the first time or rediscovering your passion after years away, Tyler’s approach strikes the perfect chord between skill-upgrading and musical self-expression.
But, how exactly does Tyler approach music, and ultimately, his teaching style?
Let's dig a little deeper to find out!
For Tyler, music is very personal. He believes every student has their own rhythm and uniqueness dying to be unleashed – and his job is to help uncover it.
His teaching isn’t about those old school rigid routines or robotic repetition that make you want to bash your head into a brick wall or smash your Gibson into the pavement – his approach is all about building a foundation of technique while keeping lessons exciting, creative, fun, and collaborative, all tailored to where each student's current skill level resides. From the very first session, Tyler invites his students into the process:
• What kind of music do you love?
• What are your goals?
• How do you learn best?
• What do you feel you’re great at? Where do you feel you can grow?
• What do you want to discover about yourself or music in the process?
With Tyler, your lessons are created like a custom playlist – crafted just for you.
As a seasoned multi-instrumentalist himself, Tyler teaches vocals, piano/keyboard, and guitar, helping students explore music from multiple angles, tones and techniques. Each instrument brings out different skills and unlocks different stories from within his artists-in-the-making (his students). Tyler’s here to guide each individual through every step, note, and progression.
Whether you're singing lead in a garage band or just trying to hit those high notes with confidence and without straining your vocal cords, Tyler teaches vocal technique in a way that's approachable, simple and empowering – to take you from singing in the shower, to belting on stage. From effective breath control and vocal health, to expanding your range and emotional expression, his goal is to help you discover your unique voice, not mimic someone else’s.
Tyler helps each student to understand that there is perfection within imperfection. There is no right way to sound like YOU. Tyler simply helps you take risks in a healthy way to uncover your true voice to ensure you get to use it to its full potential – and have fun while doing it!
Tyler introduces students to the keys with both structure and freedom. Whether you're playing pop, rock, or exploring your own compositions, he focuses on developing your ear, understanding chord progressions, and building muscle memory – all while keeping things upbeat, hands-on and at a pace that works best for each individual student.
Strumming, picking, soloing, songwriting – Tyler covers it ALL! He breaks down each technique, piece by piece, in a way that’s digestible, inspiring students to jam confidently while also learning the building blocks of music theory (without all the boring bits – we want to prepare you for a music fest, not a snooze fest).
No two students are alike – everyone has different learning styles. Whether you're a visual, kinesthetic, tactile or auditory learner, Tyler adapts his approach depending on the learning style, age, personality, and goals of each learner, for example:
Children are so full of energy and love to express themselves, without the pressure of perfection! Tyler's lessons for younger students are full of movement, play, and imagination – sky's the limit! Tyler turns foundational skills into fun so kids stay engaged while building real musical ability. It's the perfect musical playground for loads of laughter, creativity, and mini “aha!” moments.
For teenagers, music can be a space for self-expression, personal discovery and emotional clarity. Tyler creates a safe space to explore identity through music. Whether it’s writing original songs with authentic storytelling, learning performance techniques, or diving into the mindset behind the artist, Tyler helps teens channel their energy into something meaningful and fun – with zero judgment and full encouragement.
Whether you're returning to music or starting from scratch, Tyler’s lessons for adults blend goal-setting with flexibility. Life can be busy and schedules can be full, so Tyler ensures a calm, encouraging, and focused space that is centered around making progress feel fun and unlocking your true musical essence – no pressure, no performance anxiety, and definitely a few laughs along the way.
