Drum Lessons – Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQ'S

How old do I have to be to start drum lessons?

Kids can begin drum lessons as early as age 7–8, depending on coordination, focus, and interest. We offer lessons for kids, teens, and adults, and can help you determine the best time to start.

My child is younger than 7 and wants to play drums. Will you teach them?

Possibly! Some younger kids have the coordination and attention span required. Generally, we recommend that you look at one of our group programs for children under 8.  Learn more here: Sweet Child at Rock U
Call us at 866-913-9392 and we’ll chat about your child’s specific needs and readiness.

Am I too old to start playing drums?

Not at all! Many adults worry they’re “too old,” but adults make up one of our largest groups of drummers. You are never too old to learn an instrument. At Rock U, you’ll find a friendly, encouraging community of adult musicians learning together.

Do I need to own a drum kit to start lessons?

For long-term success, you will need something to practice on at home. That can be:

  • A full drum kit
  • An electronic drum kit
  • Or a simple practice pad for beginners

For your trial lesson, we provide everything you need. If you’re not sure what to buy, we’re happy to recommend beginner-friendly gear at different price points.

Should I start on acoustic or electronic drums?

Both are excellent choices for beginners.

Acoustic kits offer the most authentic feel and sound.

Electronic kits are quieter and great for small spaces.
Choose the option that fits your space, noise needs, and goals and ask us if you need guidance!

Do you sell lesson packages?

No. All of our lessons are billed month-to-month on a subscription basis.
We bill on the first of the month for the upcoming month, and you can cancel anytime.
You can read our full policies here: POLICIES

Are there performances or recitals?

We believe performing is an important part of becoming a drummer, but we understand not everyone wants to jump on stage right away.
Students in private drum lessons do not perform in our seasonal band shows.
If you want performance opportunities, we highly recommend joining a band. It’s the best way to build confidence, timekeeping skills, and stage presence.

Do I have to be in a band to take drum lessons at Rock U?

No. Anyone can enroll in drum lessons.
However, drummers benefit enormously from playing with others. Joining a band helps build timing, listening skills, and ensemble awareness and it’s incredibly fun. Pairing lessons with a band is the most powerful combination we offer.

Do you teach a specific curriculum or method?

Most of our drum students learn through the songs they love. Our teachers are skilled at adapting music to match each student’s level and goals.
If you prefer a structured method—such as RSL (Rockschool) or classic snare fundamentals—our teachers can absolutely provide that. Your instructor will let you know which books or resources to purchase.

What if I can't make it to my lesson?

No problem! When you give us 24 hours notice we will issue you a make-up credit to use at a time that is convenient to you and your teacher. You can read our complete policies here: POLICIES

What will my drum trial lesson look like?

Check in at the front desk a few minutes before your lesson. Your teacher will meet you in the lobby at your scheduled time.
Your 30-minute trial includes:

  • A conversation about your goals, experience, and musical interests
  • A short rhythm or technique assessment so the teacher can understand your starting point
  • A mini-lesson so you can experience the teacher’s style

Time to ask any questions

It’s fun, relaxed, and designed to help you feel excited and confident about starting. After your lesson, your teacher will walk you to the front desk where we can answer any additional questions and help you register for lessons or bands.
