Perfect for players tired of picking up… and putting down the guitar.
Let’s be honest – life gets BUSY. Between work, family, personal commitments, and that never-ending to-do list, finding time to sit down, pick up that guitar and give it a little attention can feel… well, like trying to catch smoke ("on the water"). But if you're truly passionate and committed to playing, there's some good news: you don’t need hours and hours a day to improve your skills. You just need a solid guitar practice routine that works best with your life's rhythm – and a little consistency.
Whether you're picking up the guitar for the first time or trying to upgrade your skills, this guide will help you build a guitar practice routine that fits your unique life and fuels your progress.
Let’s rock and roll, shall we?
Before you even pick up your pick, you'll want to ask yourself: What do I want out of this and WHY?
Maybe you’re dreaming of learning a killer riff you've always loved. Maybe you want to play around the campfire at the next family reunion without fumbling every chord. Defining your WHY gives your practice purpose and makes it much easier to stay on track when motivation dips.
Quick Tip: Grab a piece of paper and write down your top 3 guitar goals and the reason why you have that goal, and stick them where you practice – like a mini vision board! These guitar goals will help keep you on track and connected to your original reason for picking up that guitar in the first place, and keep you on track along your musical journey.
Here’s the truth: noodling around on your favourite Fender or your gorgeous Gibson for 20 minutes here and there isn’t the same as intentional practice. A focused guitar practice routine makes the difference between “meh” and major progress.
Here’s a simple way to structure your sessions (adjust the times based on how long you can practice):
Ease in with some simple finger exercises or slow strumming. Think of this as yoga for your hands. Your wrist and fingertips will thank you later!
This is where the magic really happens. Practice chord changes, picking accuracy, scales, or speed-building drills. It’s not always glamorous – in fact, sometimes it highlights where your skills are truly lacking – but it works! And once you know what you're missing, then you can adjust from there.
Time to work on actual songs. Whether it's a song you're writing or an all-time favourite cover that's near and dear to your heart, tackle the tricky parts piece by piece and celebrate the small wins along the way – it is music after all, and music is meant to fuel the soul!
Another fun way to mix up your practice is to jam out over a backing track (you can find these on YouTube)! Simply mess around with new chord combos, or try writing your own riff. This is where spontaneity and fun – meets growth.
Wrap up your guitar practice with something easy and familiar. Let your fingers – and your brain – wind down, and celebrate the fact that you just invested in your musical craft.
You don’t need an hour a day to see progress. If all you’ve got is a quick 15 minutes, perfect – use it! It’s better to play a little bit each day than to burn out after one marathon session (those raw fingertips know what we're talking about).
Pro tip: Set a timer. Focused time beats distracted strumming any day. Then when the time is up, you're done and can move onto your day!
We tend to fall into the thinking that practice (whether it be in sports or music) is a chore or a hassle…but what if we reframed it as a habit? Try to tie your guitar practice into something else you already do regularly. Morning coffee? After dinner? After School to decompress? Before bed? The more you anchor it to your unique daily rhythm, the easier it is to make it truly stick.
And hey – if you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up. Life happens, and that’s okay. Just pick it back up tomorrow!
Something many musicians (beginner and professional) like to do is keep a simple practice journal or use your phone to record yourself now and then to track your progress. It might feel awkward at first, or you may forget from time-to-time, but hearing and seeing your improvement is incredibly motivating (hello dopamine!). A little bit of growth – goes a long way.
Try this: Log what you practiced. How long, what was easy, what was more challenging, and one thing that went well. You’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come in a month!
There's nothing worse than sitting down with your guitar on your lap, feeling stuck in a rut and having zero motivation to play, let alone practice. SO, switch it up! Try a new style, explore a different genre, try writing something yourself (if you’re not already a songwriter), or learn a riff that’s totally outside your comfort zone. Your brain – and your fingers – will thank you for throwing yourself a curveball once in a while.
The best part about music: you don’t have to go it alone. Finding a great mentor who can identify your strengths AND your blind spots, fine-tune your technique, and keep you motivated when you hit a wall is always a good idea. Plus, you'll get 1:1 help on how to design a practice schedule that actually works for you.
