GUITAR LESSONS – FAQ
General FAQ'S
Kids can begin guitar lessons as early as age 8. We offer lessons for kids, teens, and adults, and can help you determine the best time to start.
We are happy to talk to you about your child’s specific circumstances. We offer a fun beginner music program called Sweet Child. If you’re looking for a great way to start your kids ages 5 – 9 in music we recommend that you enroll in this program. You can learn more here: SWEET CHILD
Absolutely not! Many adult students worry they’re “too old,” but our largest student group is adults. You are never too old to learn an instrument. At Rock U, you’ll find a supportive community of adults who are learning, growing, and playing music together.
You will need to own a guitar so that you can practice; however, for your first trial lesson, we can provide one.
If you need help choosing your first guitar, we’re happy to guide you toward great beginner-friendly options.
Either is great! We encourage beginners to choose the guitar that excites them the most.

We believe performing is an important part of being a musician—but we also understand that not everyone wants to jump on stage right away.
Our band programs perform several times a year. Students who are only registered in private lessons do not perform in these shows. If performance opportunities are important to you, we encourage pairing lessons with a band.
No—everyone is welcome to enroll in lessons.
However, the most powerful learning experience comes from combining lessons with being in a band. Playing with other musicians is fun, motivating, and incredibly effective for skill development. Lessons provide the one-on-one structure and guidance, while band rehearsals help students apply what they learn in a real musical setting.
Most of our students learn through the songs they love. Our teachers are skilled at adapting music to each student’s level and goals.
While we do not focus on a specific curriculum, our teachers are qualified to teach structured curriculums and graded-exam programs such as RCM, RSL, or Trinity if that’s your preference. Many teachers use lesson books or purchased sheet music as resources and will let you know which books to buy.
Check in at the front desk a few minutes before your lesson. Your teacher will meet you in the lobby at your scheduled time.
Your 30-minute trial includes:
- A short conversation about your goals, experience, and musical tastes
- A mini-lesson so you can get a feel for the teacher’s style
Time to ask any questions you may have
It’s relaxed, friendly, and designed to help you feel confident and excited to begin. Afterward, your teacher will walk you to the front desk where we can answer any additional questions and help you register for lessons or bands.
