VOCAL LESSONS - FAQs

General FAQ'S

How old do I have to be to start voice lessons?

We recommend children begin vocal lessons around age 8. We offer lessons for kids, teens, and adults, and can help you determine the best time to start.

My child is younger than 8 and I want them to learn singing. Will you teach them?

We’re happy to talk with you about your child’s specific circumstances to see if lessons are a good fit.
Call us at 866-913-9392.

Am I too old to start singing?

Not at all! Many adult students worry they’re “too old,” but our largest student group is adults. You are never too old to learn how to sing. At Rock U, you’ll find a supportive community of adults who are learning, growing, and developing confidence in their voice.

Do I need any special equipment to start vocal lessons?

No. You don’t need anything to get started—just yourself!
As you progress, your teacher may recommend that you purchase a microphone or resources such as warm-up tracks or sheet music, but nothing is required for your trial lesson.

Do vocal lessons help with stage fright or confidence?

Yes! Many students—kids and adults—come to us feeling nervous about singing in front of others. Vocal lessons help build technique, confidence, breathing skills, and performance readiness at a comfortable pace.

Do you sell lesson packages?

No. All of our lessons are billed month-to-month on a subscription basis.
We bill on the first of the month for the upcoming month, and you can cancel anytime.
Please note that we do not offer refunds for lessons already billed, and we appreciate as much notice as possible when cancelling.

What if I can’t make it to my lesson?

No problem! When you give us 24 hours notice we will issue you a make-up credit to use at a time that is convenient to you and your teacher. You can read our complete policies here: POLICIES

Are there performances or recitals?

We believe performing is an important part of being a musician—but we understand that not everyone is ready for the stage right away.
Students enrolled only in private vocal lessons do not perform in our seasonal band shows.
If you are interested in performance opportunities we suggest that you register for one of our bands along side your vocal lesson.

Do I have to be in a band to take vocal lessons at Rock U?

No, anyone is welcome to enroll in vocal lessons.
However, students who pair vocal lessons with being in a band often see faster growth in confidence, pitch control, and stage presence. The combination of one-on-one vocal training and real-band rehearsals creates an especially powerful learning experience.

Do you teach a specific curriculum or book?

Most of our vocal students learn through the songs they love. Our teachers are skilled at adapting music to each student’s level and vocal range.
While we don’t mandate a specific curriculum, our teachers can use structured vocal method books or exam-focused programs if that’s what you prefer. Your instructor will let you know if any materials are recommended for your goals.

What will my vocal trial lesson look like?

Check in at the front desk a few minutes before your lesson. Your teacher will meet you in the lobby at your scheduled time.
Your 30-minute trial includes:

  • A conversation about your goals, musical taste, and any previous singing experience
  • A gentle vocal warm-up and short singing exercise so the teacher can understand your range and goals
  • A mini-lesson to give you a feel for their teaching style
  • Time to ask any questions you may have

It’s relaxed, supportive, and designed to help you feel comfortable and excited to begin. After your lesson, your teacher will walk you to the front desk where we can answer any final questions and help you register for lessons or bands.
